What should you know about earache and throat pain?

The throat and ear share nerve pathways, so inflammation in the throat can be experienced as ear pain even when the ear itself is healthy. Common Cold, Influenza, COVID-19, Tonsillitis, and Strep Throat may all cause throat symptoms with referred ear discomfort. Allergic Rhinitis can cause post-nasal drainage, while Acid Reflux may irritate the throat without an infection. The combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Prompt assessment is needed for severe one-sided throat pain, dehydration, ear discharge, sudden hearing change, or a persistent high fever. A clinician may examine the throat, tonsils, ears, and neck to separate infection from reflux or allergy.

Ask whether the ear pain is referred from the throat, whether a throat swab or ear examination is needed, and which symptoms would require urgent review. Mention recent sick contacts, reflux symptoms, allergies, and any difficulty drinking.
