What should you know about ear wax blockage removal?

A plug of wax can reduce sound reaching the eardrum, producing muffled hearing, pressure, itch or ringing. The blockage may be visible, but similar symptoms can occur with canal swelling, infection or eardrum problems. Examination also checks whether the eardrum can be seen and whether there is a reason to avoid water-based methods.

Leave the canal alone until it has been assessed: cotton buds and improvised tools can compact wax or scratch delicate skin. Depending on the findings, a clinician may recommend softening drops followed by removal, or remove the wax directly with a suitable instrument or microsuction. Tell the service about tubes, a perforated eardrum, surgery, discharge or severe tenderness.

Book an assessment when blockage affects hearing, comfort or an ear examination. Seek prompt care for sudden hearing loss, strong pain, bleeding, discharge, fever or marked dizziness. If removal does not improve the blocked feeling, further assessment is needed because wax may not be the cause.
