What the device shows
The instrument has a handle, a light source and a narrow viewing tip. The tip is placed gently at the entrance of the ear canal, allowing the examiner to look for wax, irritation, swelling, fluid or changes to the eardrum. The examination can help explain symptoms such as ear discomfort, reduced hearing or a blocked sensation, but the device does not by itself provide a diagnosis.
What to expect
A clinician may ask about pain, discharge, hearing changes and any recent injury before looking in each ear. Keep still while the tip is near the canal, and mention discomfort immediately. Do not push a household torch, cotton bud or another object into the ear to copy the examination. A child may need reassurance or a child health consultation if they find the examination difficult.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment for persistent ear pain, new hearing loss, fluid or blood from the ear, marked dizziness, or symptoms after an object has entered the canal. Seek prompt care when severe symptoms begin suddenly or when a child is very distressed. A GP consultation can help determine whether the ear needs examination or treatment.
