Ear plugs to block out snoring: what to know

A plug sits in the ear canal and reduces incoming sound. Snoring is created farther away, when tissues in the upper airway vibrate during sleep, so the source remains unchanged. Persistent snoring may occur with Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea; the pattern and associated symptoms matter more than how loud it sounds to a listener.

Try a comfortable plug designed for sleeping and follow its cleaning or replacement guidance. Insert it only as far as directed, and remove it if you feel pressure, pain or itching. Make sure you can still respond to alarms or agreed safety checks. Encourage the snorer to address blocked-nose symptoms and seek advice rather than relying on your ear plugs alone.

Medical review is warranted when someone snores with breathing pauses, gasps, choking, severe daytime tiredness or morning headaches. These features can signal obstructive sleep apnoea. For the plug wearer, seek help after discharge, persistent earache, new dizziness, or hearing that becomes suddenly muffled.
