Ear pain during pregnancy: safe next steps

A Common Cold or Sinusitis may cause congestion and pressure that is felt in the ear. Earwax Buildup can produce muffled hearing or a plugged sensation. A Middle Ear Infection may cause increasing pain, fever, or fluid from the ear. Throat inflammation, such as Tonsillitis, can sometimes cause pain referred toward the ear. These possibilities cannot be separated reliably from symptoms alone.

Use rest, fluids, and a warm cloth over the outer ear. Saline nasal care may be suitable, but check the product with a pharmacist or maternity clinician. Before taking pain medicine, confirm the choice, dose, and timing with a healthcare professional who knows your pregnancy and other medicines. Do not use leftover antibiotics, ear drops, or decongestants without advice, and never insert cotton buds into the canal.

Arrange prompt medical advice for persistent or worsening pain, fever, discharge, a new hearing change, or tenderness and swelling around the ear. Seek urgent help for severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness. Tell the clinician how far along the pregnancy is and mention allergies, previous ear surgery, and treatments already used.

Ask whether the pain is caused by wax, congestion, fluid, or infection; which treatments are suitable in pregnancy; and whether you need an ear examination or follow-up if symptoms do not settle.
