Ear keloid removal at home: what to know

A keloid is scar tissue that extends beyond the original piercing, cut, or injury. Ear keloids can feel firm, itchy, tender, or tight, and they may continue to grow. Piercing jewellery, needles, chemicals, and heat can damage the surface, introduce infection, or create another wound that forms more scar tissue. A smooth bump is not automatically a keloid; other skin lumps can look similar, so an examination helps confirm the diagnosis.

Keep the area clean, avoid friction from headphones or tight jewellery, and do not pierce through the lump. Take a clear photograph if its size or colour changes, and arrange a dermatology assessment before applying acids, essential oils, or leftover medicines. Depending on the scar, a clinician may discuss steroid injection into the skin, laser treatment, freezing treatment, or a planned keloid removal procedure. Treatment may require a combination approach and follow-up because a keloid can return after removal.

Seek prompt medical care if the ear becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, or painful, if pus or bleeding appears, or if you develop fever. Arrange an assessment soon when the lump is growing, repeatedly catching on clothing, limiting sleep, or causing persistent itching. Rapid change, ulceration, or a diagnosis you are unsure about deserves professional review rather than home removal.

Ask whether the lump is a keloid or another skin lump, which treatment fits its location and size, how recurrence will be reduced, and what wound care or pressure care is needed afterward.
