What should you know about ear infection and facial swelling?

Facial swelling with ear symptoms needs medical assessment because infection and allergy require different treatment. Swelling may affect the ear, cheek, jaw, or tissues around the eye, and its speed of onset and associated symptoms help guide urgency.

An ear infection can cause local pain, warmth, tenderness, or discharge, while nearby inflammation may make the face look puffy. A skin infection such as [Cellulitis](/conditions/cellulitis/) may spread through facial tissues. Sudden swelling of the lips, tongue, eyelids, or throat can occur with [Angioedema](/conditions/angioedema/) or [Food Allergy](/conditions/food-allergy/). Facial swelling can also accompany [Sinusitis](/conditions/sinusitis/), and less commonly fluid retention related to [Chronic Kidney Disease](/conditions/chronic-kidney-disease/).

Arrange same-day assessment if swelling is new, worsening, hot, red, or tender, or if ear pain and fever are present. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and do not insert drops unless a clinician recommends them. Note any new food, medicine, bite, cosmetic, or skin product. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing or swallowing, a tight throat, faintness, rapidly spreading swelling, or swelling of the tongue. Urgent review is also needed for swelling around the eye, severe headache, confusion, or inability to open the mouth.
