Ear blocked from swimming: what should you know?

The ear canal is a narrow passage, so a small amount of water can alter hearing and create pressure. Frequent exposure to water may inflame the canal lining. Earwax can absorb moisture, swell, and sit against the canal wall. A blocked sensation may therefore come from water, wax, or inflammation, and the distinction cannot be confirmed by symptoms alone.

Let the affected ear face downward and gently move the outer ear while the head is tilted. Dry only the outer ear. Keep water out while symptoms are present and avoid inserting cotton buds or using unprescribed drops. If the ear stays blocked, a clinician can inspect it and arrange Ear Wax Removal or a Hearing Test when appropriate.

Contact a clinician if you develop Earache, canal tenderness, discharge, fever, or persistent muffled hearing. Sudden hearing loss, marked dizziness, or severe pain requires prompt assessment.
