Is leg swelling normal during pregnancy?

Short answer
Mild swelling in both legs or ankles can occur during pregnancy, but sudden, one-sided or painful swelling needs prompt assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Often noticed
- Later in the day or after standing
- Concerning pattern
- Sudden, one-sided or painful swelling
Why swelling happens
Pregnancy changes fluid balance and can slow blood return from the legs, so swelling may be more noticeable later in the day or after standing. Varicose veins can add to heaviness and ankle swelling. Swelling that appears gradually on both sides is different from a sudden change in one leg. A clinician may also consider heart failure, chronic kidney disease or other causes when swelling is extensive or accompanied by breathlessness, reduced urine or a general change in health.
Ways to ease mild swelling
Rest with your legs supported, change position regularly, and avoid standing still for long periods. Gentle walking and ankle movements can help circulation. Wear comfortable shoes and avoid tight bands around the legs. Drink normally unless your maternity team has advised a restriction. Do not start water tablets, herbal products or compression garments without discussing them with your pregnancy clinician.
When to seek urgent care
Contact your maternity team urgently for sudden swelling of the face or hands, a severe headache, vision changes, pain beneath the ribs, or feeling very unwell. Seek emergency help for one-sided leg swelling with warmth or pain, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood or collapse. Contact your clinician if swelling is rapidly worsening, persists after rest, or comes with reduced urine or breathlessness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your blood pressure and urine need checking, whether compression is suitable, and which changes should lead you directly to urgent care.

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy swelling affect both legs?
Yes. Gradual swelling around both ankles is a common pregnancy symptom, but it should still be discussed if it changes quickly.
Should I reduce fluids to control swelling?
No. Drink normally unless your maternity clinician has given specific fluid advice.
