Dummy embryo transfer: what to know

During a dummy transfer, the clinician passes a soft catheter through the cervix into the uterus, usually without an embryo. The team may use an ultrasound scan to observe the route and estimate how the catheter should be positioned. This can reveal a cervix that is angled, narrow, or difficult to pass, allowing the team to consider equipment and technique before the treatment cycle.

A mock procedure is not the embryo transfer itself and does not test whether an embryo will implant. Some people feel pressure or cramping; tell the team if you have pain or anxiety so they can pause and explain each step.

Follow your clinic's instructions about bladder filling, timing, medicines, and eating or drinking. Wear comfortable clothing and tell the team about previous cervical procedures, difficult smears, pelvic pain, allergies, or bleeding. Ask whether you should continue prescribed fertility medicines. Micronised Progesterone may be part of a fertility plan, but use it exactly as prescribed rather than changing it for a rehearsal.

Mild cramping or a small amount of spotting can occur after catheter manipulation. Contact the clinic for persistent or increasing pain, heavier bleeding, fever, unusual discharge, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent care for severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding. Follow the clinic's specific advice if symptoms occur during a treatment cycle.

Ask whether the rehearsal found any difficulty, what catheter or positioning plan will be used, and whether your bladder should be full. Ask how the findings affect your IVF schedule and which symptoms after the appointment should be reported.
