Dull Pain in the Left Flank Area: What to Know

Flank pain sits between the lower ribs and hip, along the side of the back. Muscle pain often follows exercise, lifting, prolonged posture, or a sudden movement and may change when you bend or press the area. Kidney infection presents with flank pain, fever, chills, nausea, or feeling unwell. Kidney stones may cause waves of pain that move toward the groin, with nausea or blood in the urine. A urinary tract infection can cause burning, urgency, frequent urination, or pelvic discomfort.

The left side also lies near the bowel and other abdominal structures. Pain location is useful information, but it does not establish a diagnosis by itself.
