What should you know about duct tape and cherry angioma?

A cherry angioma is a small cluster of blood vessels in the skin that may look bright red, purple, or dark red. It can be flat or raised and may catch on clothing or jewellery. A red spot cannot be identified safely from colour alone; other lesions can resemble it.

Tape has no controlled way to remove the underlying vessels. Adhesive and repeated pulling may tear the surface, especially when the spot is raised, leaving soreness or bleeding without solving the problem.

Leave the spot alone, protect it from friction, and do not cut, tie, burn, or peel it. If it bleeds, use gentle direct pressure with clean gauze and arrange medical advice if bleeding continues. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and discuss pulsed dye laser treatment or electrosurgery when removal is wanted.

Arrange a skin examination if the spot is new and changing, repeatedly bleeding, crusting, painful, rapidly enlarging, or unlike your other marks. Seek prompt care for bleeding that does not settle with sustained pressure, or for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge after injury.

Ask whether the mark has the expected appearance of a cherry angioma, whether removal is medically needed or mainly cosmetic, and which method suits its size and position. Discuss healing, pigment change, scarring, and what to do if it bleeds again.
