What should you know about duct tape and warts?

A wart is a rough skin growth caused by a viral infection in the outer skin. Covering it with tape may soften the surface or reduce touching, but tape does not confirm that a bump is a wart and may not clear it. Moles, corns, skin tags, and other lesions can look similar.

Adhesive can cause redness, itching, blistering, or broken skin. Picking or sharing nail tools can spread the virus to nearby skin or another person.

Do not apply tape to infected, bleeding, cracked, or very irritated skin. Keep the area clean, avoid picking, wash hands after touching it, and do not share files, towels, or footwear. Stop if the surrounding skin becomes sore. A clinician can discuss wart removal, cryotherapy (lesion removal), electrosurgery, or imiquimod treatment according to the wart type and location.

Seek assessment if the growth is painful, bleeding, rapidly changing, spreading quickly, or located near the eye or genitals. Arrange advice before self-treatment if you have diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system. Prompt review is sensible when a presumed wart does not improve or its identity is uncertain.
