Dry throat and stuffy nose: what should you know?

Short answer
A dry throat with a stuffy nose is often linked to a cold, allergy, dry air, or mouth breathing, and simple fluids and humidified air may ease it.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What these symptoms can mean
Nasal swelling narrows the airflow pathway. When the nose feels blocked, you may breathe through your mouth, which dries the throat, especially during sleep. A common cold may add a scratchy throat, sneezing and a runny nose. Allergic rhinitis can cause congestion, repeated sneezing and itchy or watery eyes without the feeling of being generally unwell.
Dry indoor air, air conditioning, dehydration, smoke and other irritants can make the throat feel rough while congestion persists. Facial pressure, reduced smell or thick nasal mucus can occur with sinus inflammation. Ongoing nighttime blockage and loud snoring deserve attention because they can also accompany obstructive sleep apnoea.
What you can do now
Sip water regularly and choose warm drinks if they feel soothing. Saline nasal spray or a saline rinse can loosen mucus; use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water for a rinse, and clean the device as directed. A cool-mist humidifier may help in a dry room, but keep it clean. Rest, avoid smoke, and sleep with your head slightly raised.
If allergies seem to trigger the pattern, reduce exposure to dust and other known triggers and ask a pharmacist or clinician whether allergy medication is suitable. Follow product directions, and check before using decongestants if you have high blood pressure, heart problems, glaucoma, are pregnant, or take regular medicines. Avoid using nasal decongestant sprays longer than the label advises because congestion can rebound.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly increasing throat or facial swelling, confusion, or severe dehydration. Arrange prompt medical assessment for severe facial pain, swelling around an eye, a stiff neck, or a high fever with marked illness.
Contact a clinician if symptoms are worsening, keep returning, interfere with sleep, or do not settle as expected. Assessment may distinguish a common cold from allergic rhinitis, sinusitis or chronic sinusitis. Mention one-sided blockage, nosebleeds, reduced smell that persists, or loud snoring with pauses in breathing.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could allergies, a cold, sinus inflammation or medication explain this combination? Which saline, allergy or decongestant option fits my health history? How long should I try it, and what should make me stop? Could mouth breathing, snoring or a sleep problem be contributing?

Questions people ask
Can a stuffy nose make my throat dry?
Yes. Nasal blockage can lead to mouth breathing, which removes moisture from the throat, particularly overnight.
When should I worry about a dry throat and stuffy nose?
Seek urgent help for breathing or swallowing difficulty, rapidly increasing swelling, confusion or severe dehydration. Arrange assessment when symptoms are severe, worsening, recurrent or persistent.
What can soothe these symptoms at home?
Regular fluids, saline nasal care, a clean cool-mist humidifier, rest and avoiding smoke may provide relief.
