Dry throat and headache: what to check

A common cold, COVID-19, or allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat and produce head pressure or headache. Dehydration may cause thirst, dark urine, dizziness, and headache, while heat exhaustion can add weakness, sweating, nausea, or cramps. Chronic sinusitis may cause facial pressure and nasal symptoms. Stress and generalised anxiety disorder can contribute to tension-type headache and dry-mouth sensations, although they should not be assumed without considering physical causes.

The condition presents with headache in a particular context, but headache alone does not identify the cause. Recent heat exposure, fluid intake, nasal congestion, sick contacts, medicines, and the speed of onset are useful details for assessment.

Move to a cool place if you have been in heat, loosen excess clothing, and sip fluids regularly. Rest in a quiet room, avoid smoke and strong scents, and use saline nasal care if congestion is contributing. Choose pain relief only as directed and check suitability with a pharmacist if you have other conditions, take regular medicines, or might be pregnant.

If an infection is possible, limit close contact while unwell and follow local testing or public-health advice. Do not keep increasing pain medicine because the headache has not yet settled; persistent symptoms need review.

Get emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck, trouble speaking, vision loss, or difficulty breathing. Seek urgent advice for repeated vomiting, inability to drink, severe dizziness, unusual drowsiness, very hot skin with worsening illness, or symptoms after significant heat exposure. Arrange a review when headaches are new and recurrent, or throat dryness persists.
