Dry throat and body aches: possible causes

Influenza and COVID-19 can present with a dry or irritated throat, muscle aches, fever, chills, cough, or unusual tiredness. Dengue fever and malaria may be relevant after travel or mosquito exposure, while brucellosis can follow contact with infected animals or unpasteurised products. Fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, and long COVID can cause body aches or fatigue without a short-lived throat infection.

The condition presents with the symptom in different patterns, and symptoms alone cannot establish a diagnosis. Travel history, fever pattern, exposures, duration, and examination help a clinician decide whether testing is needed.

Rest, drink fluids in small regular amounts, and use warm drinks or simple throat soothing measures. Avoid strenuous activity while you feel unwell, and reduce close contact with others if an infection is possible. Check the label before using pain or fever medicine, particularly if you have liver disease, take other medicines, or have recently travelled.

Contact a clinician promptly after travel to a malaria area if fever or chills develop; malaria can become serious and requires testing. Do not self-treat a travel-related fever with leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, a stiff neck, unusual bleeding, or inability to swallow. Arrange same-day medical advice for a high or persistent fever, severe headache, rash, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, or illness after travel. Review symptoms if body aches continue after the throat settles or keep returning.
