What should you know about dry spots on skin?

Dryness weakens the outer skin barrier, allowing more water to escape and making the area more sensitive. Hot showers, strong soaps, frequent handwashing, low humidity, friction, and fragranced products can contribute. Eczema and contact dermatitis may cause itch and redness; psoriasis can create thicker scale. A ring-shaped patch, a spot with a raised edge, or an area that changes after sun exposure may need a closer examination. Color, scale, texture, and symptoms are more useful clues than dryness alone.

Keep showers short and lukewarm, use a gentle cleanser only where needed, and pat the skin dry. Apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment soon afterward and reapply when the area feels tight. Wear soft fabrics, reduce rubbing, and pause scrubs, bleaching products, and strong active ingredients on the patch. Test new products on a small area first. Moisturizing can ease symptoms, but it should not delay assessment of a persistent or unusual lesion.

See a clinician if the patch is not settling, keeps returning, spreads, becomes very itchy, cracks, bleeds, oozes, or changes in shape or color. Seek prompt care for warmth, pus, fever, severe pain, facial swelling, or rapidly worsening redness. Take a clear photograph and note exposures such as a new detergent, cosmetic, medication, or workplace irritant.

Ask what features distinguish eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, infection, or another lesion, and whether any testing is needed. Ask which moisturizer and treatment suit the body area and how to prevent recurrence.
