What should you know about dry spots on lips?

Short answer
Dry spots on the lips often reflect irritation or moisture loss, while persistent cracking, sores, or a changing patch should be examined.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What can cause dry lip spots
Lips can become dry after wind, sun, air conditioning, dehydration, or repeated wetting from licking. Fragrance, flavoring, menthol, cinnamon, and some dental products may trigger contact irritation. A dry, scaly area at the lip edge can also be associated with eczema or cheilitis. Cracks at the corners may have different causes from a flaky spot on the central lip, so the exact location matters. A sore, blister, or thickened area is not the same as simple dryness and should not be diagnosed from appearance alone.
How to care for dry lips
Apply a bland, fragrance-free ointment frequently, especially after eating and before sleep. Avoid licking, biting, peeling skin, and fragranced lip products. Use lip protection with sun protection outdoors and cover the lips in windy conditions. Stop one recently added product at a time so a trigger is easier to identify. Do not share lip products if there are blisters or open areas, and avoid applying steroid or medicated creams without advice because the lip surface absorbs products readily.
When to seek medical care
Book an assessment when dryness lasts despite simple care, repeatedly returns, bleeds, becomes thick or crusted, or affects one persistent area. Seek prompt help for rapidly increasing swelling, trouble swallowing or breathing, spreading redness, pus, or severe pain. A clinician may need to distinguish irritation from infection, allergy, eczema, or a sun-related change.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which ingredients to avoid, whether the corners or lip border suggest a different problem, and whether a swab, allergy assessment, or prescription treatment is needed. Ask how long to continue barrier care after symptoms improve.

Questions people ask
Can licking the lips make dry spots worse?
Yes. Saliva evaporates quickly and repeated wetting can disrupt the lip barrier, encouraging more dryness and cracking.
When is a dry lip patch more than simple dryness?
A patch that persists, changes, bleeds, crusts, or becomes painful needs clinical assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
