Short answer

Dry skin under the feet often reflects reduced moisture combined with pressure or friction, but deep cracks, itch or scaling can signal a condition needing treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main contributors
Moisture loss, pressure and friction.
Safe habit
Moisturize the soles after washing, not between the toes.

Why the soles become dry

The skin on the soles is exposed to repeated pressure, footwear friction and washing, while it has no oil glands. Thickened areas may feel rough or develop flakes and heel fissures. Asteatotic Eczema, Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis can cause persistent dryness. Scaling between the toes, burning or an unpleasant odor may point toward a different problem and should not be treated by simply adding heavier cream.

Care at home

Wash with warm rather than hot water and pat dry, especially between the toes. Apply a fragrance-free emollient to the soles and heels while the skin is still slightly damp; keep excess product away from spaces between the toes. Choose breathable, well-fitting footwear and change damp socks. Avoid cutting thick skin with blades. A clinician can recommend a targeted product when scaling, inflammation or recurrent cracking persists.

When to seek care

Book an assessment for painful fissures, bleeding, spreading redness, swelling, warmth, pus, persistent itch or scaling that returns despite careful moisturizing. Seek urgent advice if a foot becomes rapidly swollen or painful, particularly if you have diabetes, reduced sensation or poor circulation. A small break in the skin can need specialized care in these situations.

Questions for your doctor

Could the pattern be eczema, psoriasis or a fungal infection? Which emollient is suitable for my soles? Should I treat the spaces between my toes differently? How should I protect a crack that is bleeding or painful?

Questions people ask

Should I file dry skin under my feet?

Gentle smoothing may be suitable for intact thick skin, but avoid aggressive filing over cracks, pain, redness or bleeding.

Why do my heels keep cracking?

Repeated pressure and low moisture can make thick heel skin split; persistent or painful cracks need a clinician’s advice.
