Dry Skin and Perioral Dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory rash around the mouth that may look dry, tight, scaly, or dotted with small red bumps. The skin immediately next to the lip border may be less affected than the surrounding area. Burning and Sensitive Skin symptoms can be more noticeable than itch. Toothpaste residue, cosmetics, heavy occlusive products, nasal sprays, and topical corticosteroids may be relevant exposures, but a clinician must assess the full pattern. Pimples elsewhere do not automatically make a mouth rash acne.

Keep the routine simple: use lukewarm water or a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, stop scrubs and facial brushes, and avoid picking. Temporarily pause new cosmetics, thick balms, and fragranced products around the mouth. Do not start or restart a topical corticosteroid there without medical guidance; stopping one may need a clinician-directed plan. If perioral dermatitis is suspected, treatment can involve Topical Antibiotic Therapy or, in selected cases, an oral medicine. These should be chosen by a clinician after examination rather than borrowed from acne treatment.

Book an appointment if bumps and scaling persist, spread toward the nose or eyes, or return after treatment changes. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, eye pain, pus, fever, or breathing difficulty. Bring a list of creams, inhalers, nasal products, toothpaste, and cosmetics, because the timing of each exposure can help identify the trigger.
