Dry Skin on the Penis: What to Know

Soap, shower gel, fragranced products, sweat, tight clothing, and sexual friction can irritate sensitive genital skin. Dryness may appear as tightness, fine scale, or superficial cracking. Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, or another inflammatory condition can affect genital skin, while infection may cause itch, soreness, discharge, odour, or sores. The appearance can overlap, so avoid assuming the cause from dryness alone.

Rinse with lukewarm water and use a mild fragrance-free cleanser only where needed. Pat dry, avoid scrubbing, and apply a bland fragrance-free moisturiser to external skin if it does not sting. Avoid fragranced lubricants, antiseptics, and unprescribed combination creams. Pause sexual activity if friction causes pain or cracks, and use a suitable lubricant when resuming. Emollient Therapy may be appropriate after a clinician confirms the cause.

Arrange an assessment for persistent or recurrent dryness, cracks, bleeding, marked itch, colour change, or a rash under the foreskin. Seek prompt care for ulcers, blisters, pus, discharge, severe swelling, fever, painful urination, or inability to pass urine. A sexual-health or dermatology clinician can examine the area privately and test for infection when appropriate.

Ask whether products, friction, eczema, Psoriasis, or infection best explains the change; what cleanser and moisturiser to use; and whether sexual-health testing is appropriate.
