Dry skin on the breast: what to know

Dryness can appear as flaking, tightness, itch, or a rough patch on the breast or around the nipple. New bras, sweat, detergent, fragrances, and friction can irritate this sensitive skin. Atopic Dermatitis may cause itchy inflamed skin, while Psoriasis can create sharply outlined scale; Asteatotic Eczema is another possible explanation for marked dryness. The appearance alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Rinse with lukewarm water, avoid fragranced washes and scrubs, and pat dry. Apply a plain emollient to the dry skin after bathing, keeping products away from the nipple opening if they sting. Wear a well-fitting, breathable bra and change out of damp clothing. Avoid trying several active creams at once, especially on broken skin, because this can make irritation harder to identify.

Arrange a clinical review if dryness is one-sided, persists, recurs in the same spot, or involves the nipple. Seek prompt care for nipple discharge, bleeding, ulceration, a new lump, marked swelling, warmth, fever, or rapidly changing redness. These signs do not diagnose a serious condition, but they should not be attributed to simple dryness without examination.

Ask whether the location and pattern fit dermatitis, what products should be stopped, whether the nipple is involved, and how long to try emollient care before review.
