Dry skin and folliculitis: what to know

Folliculitis may appear as small red or tender bumps, sometimes with a central hair or pus. Shaving, friction, sweating, occlusive clothing and damaged skin can irritate follicles. Dryness may cause scaling and itch beside the bumps, but it does not by itself establish the cause. Clean the area gently, avoid scrubbing and pause shaving or waxing over active bumps. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change after sweating. Do not squeeze or pick lesions, because this can injure nearby skin and spread irritation. Keep dry areas moisturised with a non-comedogenic fragrance-free product, but avoid putting thick ointment over draining bumps unless advised.
