What should you know about dry skin around eyes and eyelids?

Eyelid skin can react to mascara, eyeliner, lash adhesive, eye cream, shampoo, nail products transferred by touch or contact lenses and their solutions. It may look red, flaky or swollen and can sting when you blink. Atopic Dermatitis may involve the eyelids; Psoriasis and Asteatotic Eczema are other possibilities when scale or dry patches occur on the face or body too.

The trigger is not always the product applied directly to the eyelid. A clinician may ask about hand products, haircare and timing, then examine both the skin and the eye when needed.

Wash hands before touching the area. Use lukewarm water, avoid rubbing and pat the lids dry. Apply a thin layer of bland, fragrance-free moisturiser to the closed eyelid or surrounding skin only if it does not enter the eye. Stop eye makeup, lash treatments, exfoliants and new skincare while the rash is active, and avoid peeling scale.

Do not self-treat eyelids with leftover prescription creams. A clinician can choose a treatment safe for this thin skin. Emollient Therapy may support the barrier when dryness is the main concern.

Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision change, light sensitivity, pus-like discharge, severe swelling or redness of the eye. Arrange review for persistent, recurrent, cracked, oozing or one-sided eyelid changes, especially if a new product or medicine preceded them.

Ask whether this could be contact irritation or Atopic Dermatitis, which products should be stopped, what is safe for the eyelids, whether the eye itself needs checking, and how to prevent another flare.
