Dry Skin and Large Pores: What Should You Know?

Short answer
Dryness can make facial texture and large pores look more noticeable, but pore appearance also reflects oil, congestion, elasticity and sun-related skin changes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful foundation
- Gentle cleansing, moisturiser and daily sun protection
- Treatment caution
- Retinoids and procedures can irritate skin if started while it is very dry
Why pores may stand out
Pores are openings connected to hair follicles and oil glands. Dehydrated skin can look rough, making openings cast more visible shadows; it does not mean the pores have permanently changed. Oil, dead-cell buildup and acne can make them appear larger, while reduced firmness from photoaging can reduce support around them.
Texture can also look uneven after irritation or over-exfoliation. The useful distinction is whether the skin feels tight and flaky, looks congested, or has inflamed spots. These patterns call for different routines.
A balanced routine
Cleanse gently, moisturise consistently and avoid scrubbing or very hot water. Use sunscreen during the day because cumulative light exposure contributes to loss of firmness and uneven texture. If blackheads or acne are present, a clinician may discuss topical retinoids; start gradually because these medicines can irritate dry skin.
Microneedling is sometimes considered for texture, but it should be planned after the skin is calm and the indication is clear. A professional can assess acne activity, sensitivity and the risk of post-treatment irritation before recommending a procedure.
When to seek care
Arrange a dermatology review if dryness is persistent, painful or peeling despite moisturising, or if enlarged-looking pores occur with frequent breakouts, scarring or marked redness. Seek prompt advice for a sudden widespread reaction, swelling, oozing or painful lesions.
Questions for your doctor
Is dehydration the main reason my pores look prominent? Are acne or sun-damaged skin contributing? How can I introduce a retinoid without worsening dryness? Would microneedling suit my skin and current condition?

Questions people ask
Can moisturiser make pores larger?
A suitable non-comedogenic moisturiser does not enlarge pores and may improve the rough look caused by dryness.
Can pores be permanently closed?
Pores cannot be sealed shut, but reducing congestion and protecting skin firmness can soften their appearance.
