Dry scalp with yellow flakes: what to know

Yellow or yellowish scale may cling to the scalp when oil mixes with shed skin. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis commonly produce this type of flaking, often with itch or redness. Scalp psoriasis can create thicker, sharply defined plaques that extend beyond the hairline. Scalp ringworm may cause scaling with broken hairs, tender areas, or patchy hair loss and needs medical assessment.

A clinician will consider the scale's texture, the degree of redness, the distribution, and whether anyone else in the household has similar symptoms. Avoid assuming that the colour alone identifies the cause.

Wash regularly with a mild cleanser, avoid scratching, and rinse away styling residue. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or towels if an infection is possible. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend a medicated shampoo treatment based on the examination. Use it as directed and stop if it causes marked irritation.

Book a medical review for thick plaques, significant redness, pain, crusting, spreading scale, or symptoms that keep returning. Seek prompt care for patchy hair loss, broken hairs, swollen tender areas, or pus. These features can point to a condition needing prescription treatment rather than routine moisturising.

Ask whether the flakes fit dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or ringworm; whether testing is needed; and how long to try a medicated shampoo before reassessment.
