Dry Scalp but No Dandruff: What to Know

Scalp tightness can follow hot water, frequent shampooing, hair dye, fragranced products, or dry air. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis can be subtle, especially when scale is fine or intermittent, and itch may be more noticeable than flakes. A scalp can also feel dry while the hair or skin surface has normal oil. Look for redness, greasy scale, thick plaques, sores, or broken hairs rather than relying on the dry sensation alone.

Try a gentle, fragrance-free shampoo, lukewarm water, and thorough rinsing. Avoid scratching, harsh scrubs, and new dyes or styling products until the scalp settles. If visible flaking or itch appears, note its pattern before starting a medicated shampoo treatment. A clinician can decide whether a topical antifungal treatment or another approach is appropriate; do not assume every dry scalp needs an antifungal.

Seek assessment for persistent itch, thick or spreading scale, marked redness, painful bumps, oozing, sores, swollen glands, or hair loss. Prompt care is appropriate for fever, severe pain, or rapidly worsening inflammation. Bring the products you use and describe when symptoms began.
