Dry red spots on the face: what to look for

Acne often includes blocked pores and inflamed pimples. Folliculitis is inflammation around hairs and may produce grouped tender or itchy bumps. Razor bumps can follow hair removal, while hormonal acne tends to recur in a pattern linked with hormonal changes. Perioral dermatitis can cause small bumps and irritation around the mouth, and rosacea may cause recurring central facial redness with sensitive bumps.

Cleanse gently, moisturise with a non-comedogenic fragrance-free product, and pause new or harsh products. Avoid picking, abrasive scrubs, and close shaving over active spots. Use clean shaving tools and shave in the direction of hair growth. If spots persist or recur, a clinician can match treatment to the pattern rather than treating every red mark as acne.

Book an assessment for painful deep lesions, spreading redness, scarring, recurrent flares, or a rash that does not improve with gentle care. Seek prompt help for marked swelling, pus with fever, severe eye symptoms, or rapidly worsening facial inflammation.
