Dry red skin on the face: possible causes and care

Contact dermatitis often follows exposure to an irritating or allergenic product. Rosacea may affect the central face and flare with heat or other triggers. Psoriasis can form persistent, well-defined scaly plaques. Heat rash causes small itchy bumps in hot, sweaty areas, and sunburn follows ultraviolet exposure. A hot, tender, rapidly expanding patch with fever requires prompt evaluation for cellulitis.

Use lukewarm water, a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and a simple moisturiser while the skin settles. Stop newly introduced products and avoid exfoliating acids, scrubs, fragranced oils, and picking. Protect exposed skin from sunlight with shade and suitable sunscreen. Reintroduce products one at a time only after the irritation has settled.

See a clinician if the redness persists, repeatedly returns, affects the eyes, or causes significant cracking or discomfort. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, blistering over a large area, pus, fever, rapidly spreading warmth, or breathing difficulty.

Take a list of products and medicines used recently. Ask whether the distribution suggests contact dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis, heat rash, or sunburn, and which treatment is appropriate for your face.
