What should you know about dry mouth lung cancer?

Chemotherapy, radiotherapy involving the head or neck, pain medicines, anti-sickness medicines, oxygen, and reduced fluid intake can lower saliva or make the mouth feel dry. Anxiety and breathing through the mouth may contribute too. Dry mouth does not show that lung cancer is present, and people with lung cancer can have it for reasons unrelated to the tumour. A hoarse voice, persistent cough, chest discomfort, or swallowing changes should be discussed separately with the treating team.

Sip water regularly if your clinicians have not restricted fluids. Use sugar-free gum or lozenges to stimulate saliva, moisten meals with gravy or broth, and keep lips protected with a simple balm. Brush gently with fluoride toothpaste and ask about a suitable rinse or saliva substitute. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and mouthwashes that sting. Your team can review medicines, check for thrush or dental problems, and involve palliative care when symptom relief is needed alongside cancer treatment.

Contact your cancer team if dryness causes mouth sores, white patches, bleeding, worsening pain, difficulty eating, or reduced urine. Seek urgent help for fever, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or inability to swallow fluids. Report new neurological symptoms such as severe headache, weakness, confusion, or a seizure urgently, whether or not they seem related to the mouth.
