Dry Mouth, Fatigue and Body Aches: What Should You Know?

Influenza and COVID-19 commonly present with fatigue and body aches; fever, cough, sore throat, or a change in smell may also occur. Fever, sweating, vomiting, or diarrhoea can leave the mouth dry through fluid loss. Brucellosis or malaria may cause broader illness with fever, chills, sweats, or travel and animal-exposure clues. When symptoms persist after an infection, Long COVID can include ongoing fatigue. Fibromyalgia can present with widespread pain and fatigue, while hypothyroidism may cause tiredness, dry skin, feeling cold, or constipation. These conditions are not diagnosed from this symptom group alone.

Rest, take regular sips of fluid, and eat small nourishing portions if appetite allows. Check your temperature and record when the aches began, along with cough, bowel symptoms, travel, insect exposure, or contact with someone unwell. Seek a clinician’s advice if symptoms are worsening, last beyond a short illness, or interfere with daily activity. Testing or blood tests may be appropriate depending on the history.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a severe headache, a stiff neck, inability to drink, or very little urine. A high fever with marked weakness or recent travel to a malaria area also warrants prompt assessment. Do not wait for symptoms to settle if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or have a serious long-term condition.

Ask which tests fit your symptoms and whether an infection, medicine, thyroid problem, or pain condition is more plausible. Mention fever, travel, animal contact, insect bites, recent infections, medicines, and how the pain is distributed.
