Dry, itchy, watery eyes: what to know

Itching strongly points toward an allergic response, while dryness can occur when tears evaporate quickly or the eye surface is irritated. Watery eyes can be the eye's response to dryness, dust, smoke, wind, screen strain, or an allergy. Allergic conjunctivitis may affect both eyes and may occur with sneezing or a runny nose; allergic rhinitis, pet allergy, and house dust mite allergy can occur together with eye symptoms.

Symptoms alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may check the eye surface, eyelids, vision, medicines, contact-lens use, and exposure to allergens. Avoid rubbing, because rubbing can increase irritation and swelling.

Use a cool, clean compress over closed eyes and take breaks from screens. Keep smoke, strong fragrances, dust, and direct air-conditioning away from your face. Wash hands before touching your eyes, and pause contact lenses while the eyes are irritated unless an eye professional advises otherwise. Preservative-free lubricating drops may soothe dryness; ask a pharmacist which option suits you. If allergy is suspected, reducing exposure and discussing allergy medication with a pharmacist may help.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms keep returning, interfere with vision or sleep, or do not settle with simple measures. Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, marked light sensitivity, a sudden change in vision, an eye injury, or pronounced swelling. Contact-lens users should seek prompt advice for pain, redness, or reduced vision because infection can worsen quickly.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, dry eye, eyelid irritation, or another problem; whether your medicines or contact lenses contribute; and which drops are appropriate. Mention when symptoms began, whether one or both eyes are affected, and any vision change.
