Dry itchy vulva skin: what to know

The vulval skin can become dry or itchy after fragranced washes, wipes, pads, shaving, tight clothing, sweat, or repeated washing. Eczema may cause itch and sensitivity, while psoriasis can produce persistent, clearly bordered patches. Asteatotic eczema is another dry-skin pattern. Vaginal discharge, odour, sores, burning with urination, or pain during sex may point to a problem needing a different assessment; vulval itch is not a diagnosis by itself.

Rinse with lukewarm water or use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser on the external area only, then pat dry. Avoid douching, scented products, bubble baths, deodorant sprays, and scrubbing. Choose breathable underwear and change out of damp clothing. A plain emollient may support the outer skin barrier, but do not insert products or use steroid, antifungal, or antiseptic treatments without advice. Keep note of menstrual products, laundry products, and activities that precede flares.

Book a medical review for itch that persists, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or comes with cracks, bleeding, skin colour change, thickening, sores, lumps, discharge, or urinary pain. Seek prompt care for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, or spreading redness. Avoid delaying an examination when the appearance changes or symptoms remain unexplained.

Ask: Does the skin look like eczema, psoriasis, irritation, or infection? Which cleanser and emollient are suitable? Should I stop a particular product? Do I need an examination or swab, and how should treatment be used on this area?
