Dry itchy eyes with light sensitivity

When the tear film is uneven, the exposed eye surface can feel gritty and react strongly to bright light. Allergies may cause itching, watering, and swollen lids, while inflammation or a scratched cornea can add pain and marked light sensitivity. Contact lenses can worsen irritation, particularly when worn too long or during an eye problem. Light sensitivity is not a way to diagnose the cause from home; pain, vision change, or one-sided symptoms make an examination more important.

Move to softer lighting and wear sunglasses outdoors without pressing them against the eyes. Rest from screens, blink gently, and use a cool clean compress. Do not rub the eyes, patch them, or use leftover antibiotic or steroid drops. Remove contact lenses and use glasses until a clinician says lenses are suitable again. Avoid smoke, dust, and eye cosmetics. Lubricating drops may ease dryness when labelled for that use, but they should not delay care when light sensitivity is new or strong.

Seek same-day medical advice for new or worsening light sensitivity, especially with pain, reduced vision, a very red eye, headache, nausea, or contact-lens use. Emergency help is needed after an eye injury or chemical splash, or if vision is suddenly lost. Mild irritation that improves promptly still needs review if it repeatedly returns.
