What should you know about dry flaky scalp after bleaching?

Bleaching products can irritate the scalp, especially when they touch sensitive or already inflamed skin. Burning during application, tightness, redness, tenderness, and shedding flakes soon afterward support irritation, but they do not prove that bleaching is the only cause.

Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis may become more noticeable around the same time. Thick plaques can occur with scalp psoriasis, while ringworm may cause scale with broken hairs or patchy hair loss. The timing, pattern, and scalp examination help separate these possibilities.

Rinse the scalp thoroughly if product remains, then use cool or lukewarm water and a bland, fragrance-free cleanser. Pause bleaching, colouring, heat styling, scratching, and fragranced scalp products until the skin is comfortable.

Do not apply another chemical treatment to cover the flakes. If a clinician or pharmacist recommends medicated shampoo, use it exactly as directed and keep it away from irritated eyes and broken skin.

Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread hives, blistering, or severe burning after the product. Arrange a dermatology review for persistent redness, painful crusts, pus, thick plaques, or patchy hair loss.

Ask whether this is irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, whether infection or psoriasis needs checking, when colouring can safely resume, and which scalp products are least likely to trigger another reaction.
