Dry cracked skin under the eyes: what to know

The skin under the eyes is thin and can react to cleansers, makeup, fragrance, eyelash products, hair dye, eye drops, sweat, tears, and rubbing. Atopic dermatitis commonly presents with itch and dry inflammation, while Psoriasis can cause scale that may extend onto nearby skin. Cracks may sting with water or cosmetics. One-sided swelling, discharge, or symptoms inside the eye are less typical of simple dryness and should not be self-diagnosed from a mirror.

Stop new eye-area products and avoid rubbing, scrubbing, and makeup over open cracks. Clean gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and use a small amount of bland, fragrance-free moisturiser on the skin beneath the eye, keeping it out of the eye itself. Emollient Therapy offers general moisturising guidance, but not every product is suitable near the eye. Do not use steroid, antibiotic, or cosmetic lightening creams there without a clinician’s advice. Cool compresses may soothe irritation, while rubbing can prolong the barrier damage.

Arrange a medical review if cracking lasts, returns often, or is accompanied by marked itch or rash elsewhere. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, vision changes, light sensitivity, pus, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, or swelling that makes it difficult to open the eye. Contact a clinician promptly after a chemical or cosmetic exposure, especially if the eye itself feels affected.

Ask whether the pattern suggests contact irritation, Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, or an eye-area infection; which moisturiser is safe near your eyes; and whether any makeup, drops, or hair product should be stopped.
