Dry cough with phlegm: what should you know?

Coughing helps move mucus out of the breathing tubes. The cough may feel dry when little mucus is brought up, even though phlegm is present deeper in the airways. A recent Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis can leave the airways sensitive after other symptoms improve. Nasal drainage from Allergic Rhinitis may irritate the throat, while Acid Reflux can trigger cough without obvious heartburn. Asthma can cause cough that varies with exercise, cold air, dust, or night-time exposure. Bronchiectasis and Chronic Cough need medical assessment when symptoms persist or keep returning.

Drink fluids regularly, avoid tobacco smoke and strong fragrances, and keep the air comfortably humid without using hot steam near children. Rest your voice if throat irritation is contributing. Note when the cough began, whether phlegm is clear or coloured, and what triggers it. Do not start antibiotics or someone else’s inhaler without advice; treatment depends on the cause. A clinician may listen to your chest and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, or coughing blood. Arrange prompt medical review if breathing becomes harder, fever is persistent, you feel markedly unwell, or the cough is not settling. People with asthma, COPD, significant lung disease, or a weakened immune system should seek advice earlier when a new cough appears.
