Dry cough with a little blood: what to know

Forceful coughing may scratch or inflame the throat and bronchial lining. A recent Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis can make these tissues sensitive. Blood can also originate in the nose, mouth, or gums rather than the lungs. Repeated episodes, breathlessness, fever, chest discomfort, or ongoing mucus raise the need for a fuller assessment, including consideration of Bronchiectasis or other lung conditions.

Describe the colour and texture, whether it was mixed with mucus or saliva, and whether it followed nosebleeding, vomiting, or vigorous coughing. Mention blood-thinning medicines and any smoking or lung history.

Arrange prompt medical advice rather than watching the symptom indefinitely. Avoid smoke, vaping, and strenuous exertion while waiting. Keep hydrated and do not take a cough medicine containing an ingredient that a clinician has advised you to avoid. Never discontinue prescribed medicines without instructions.

Seek emergency help if bleeding increases or repeats closely, or if you have difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or blue or grey lips. Same-day assessment is appropriate for blood with fever, worsening illness, dizziness, or a clotting problem. If it stops completely, still report it if unexplained or recurrent.
