Dry cough when taking a deep breath: what to know

A larger breath stretches and moves air through the bronchial tubes. If those airways are inflamed after Acute Bronchitis or a Common Cold, or irritated by smoke, dust, or cold air, the extra airflow can provoke a cough. Allergic Rhinitis may add drainage into the throat. Asthma can present with cough, wheeze, chest tightness, or symptoms brought on by exercise or cold air.

Pay attention to whether the cough is new, follows an illness, appears with exertion, or is associated with sharp chest pain. Recurrent or long-lasting coughing may need evaluation for Chronic Cough and review of medicines, allergies, and lung history.

Move away from smoke, aerosols, dust, and strong scents. Drink fluids, breathe gently through the nose when possible, and avoid forcing repeated deep breaths to test the symptom. Rest while recovering from an infection. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an inhaler or other treatment fits your symptoms; do not borrow medication.

Get emergency help if you cannot speak comfortably because of breathlessness, develop blue or grey lips, become confused or faint, or have severe chest pain. Seek prompt review for coughing blood, high or persistent fever, rapidly worsening symptoms, new wheeze, or breathlessness at rest. Arrange a routine appointment if the cough persists, returns repeatedly, or limits walking, sleep, or work.
