When a dry cough turns into a mucus cough

After a cold or acute bronchitis, irritated airways may begin producing mucus as inflammation develops or settles. Nasal drainage can also run into the throat and trigger coughing. Asthma, reflux, and long-standing airway conditions can produce changing cough patterns too. Mucus that is clear, white, yellow, or green should be considered alongside fever, breathlessness, chest pain, and how you feel overall rather than used as a diagnosis by itself.

A clinician may ask how the cough began, whether you wheeze, and whether you have smoke exposure or a history of lung disease. They may examine your chest if symptoms persist or worsen.

Drink fluids, rest, avoid smoking and irritating fumes, and allow mucus to come up rather than repeatedly suppressing a productive cough. Cover coughs and wash your hands to reduce spread if an infection is possible. A pharmacist can advise about suitable medicines after checking your age, conditions, and current treatment. Do not start antibiotics based on mucus colour alone.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, collapse, or major chest pressure. Arrange prompt assessment for coughing blood, worsening breathlessness, dehydration, persistent high fever, sharp chest pain with breathing, or symptoms that are getting worse instead of easing. Recurrent mucus cough or a cough that continues beyond the expected illness also merits a clinical review.
