Dry cough treatment at home

Short answer
Dry cough treatment at home focuses on soothing an irritated throat, drinking fluids, avoiding smoke and other triggers, and watching for warning signs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a dry cough can mean
A dry cough brings up little or no mucus. It can happen when the throat or airways are irritated by a viral infection, dry air, smoke, dust, or strong scents. A cough may also occur with post-nasal drainage, asthma, or acid reflux. The sound alone cannot identify its cause. A recent cold can leave the airways sensitive even after other symptoms improve; see Common Cold for related symptoms.
Notice when the cough starts, what worsens it, whether you have wheezing or breathlessness, and whether lying down or eating brings it on. This information helps a clinician assess possibilities such as Asthma or Acid Reflux. A cough that continues or keeps returning deserves an assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
Ways to ease it at home
Sip water or a warm drink regularly, and use a humidifier or steamy bathroom air if the room feels dry. Honey in a warm drink may soothe an adult's throat, but do not give honey to a baby under twelve months. Rest your voice, avoid cigarette smoke and vaping, and move away from perfumes, cleaning fumes, and dusty air. Keep the bedroom comfortably cool and drink enough to avoid a dry mouth.
Ask a pharmacist about an appropriate cough remedy, especially if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or have a long-term condition. Follow the product instructions and avoid combining products with overlapping ingredients. Antibiotics do not treat every cough; treatment depends on the underlying cause.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent medical help for severe trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or chest pain that is severe or persistent. Arrange prompt assessment if you cough blood, develop a high fever or marked weakness, or have worsening breathlessness or wheezing. Children who are struggling to breathe, feeding poorly, unusually sleepy, or turning blue need urgent care.
Book a medical review when the cough is not settling, repeatedly interrupts sleep, follows exposure to a new medicine, or keeps coming back. Ongoing cough may need assessment for Chronic Cough, Asthma, or another airway problem. In young children, breathing symptoms can require evaluation for Bronchiolitis.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What could be triggering my dry cough? Which symptoms should make me seek urgent help? Could my medicines, allergies, reflux, or asthma be contributing? Do I need an examination or breathing tests? Which over-the-counter product is suitable for me, and how should I use it?

Questions people ask
Can I treat a dry cough without antibiotics?

What should I avoid with a dry cough?
Avoid smoke, vaping, dusty air, strong scents, and fumes; these can further irritate sensitive airways.
When does a dry cough need a doctor?
Arrange care for breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing blood, significant fever or weakness, or a cough that persists or keeps returning.
