Dry cough treatment: options and safety

A cough after a cold may reflect sensitive airways. Allergic rhinitis can cause drainage that irritates the throat, while asthma can cause cough, wheeze, or tightness. Acid reflux may trigger coughing after food or during sleep. Some medicines can also cause a persistent dry cough. A clinician can review the pattern rather than treating the cough in isolation.
