Dry cough and tight chest: what to know

Viral airway irritation, asthma, allergies, acid reflux, and acute bronchitis can all cause coughing without much mucus. Asthma often brings wheezing, chest pressure, or symptoms after exercise, at night, or around triggers. Reflux may cause a cough after meals or when lying down. A cold or bronchitis can leave the airways sensitive even after other symptoms improve.

The sensation of tightness does not identify one cause by itself. A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels, and ask about timing, triggers, medicines, smoking, and previous breathing problems.

Rest, drink fluids, and avoid smoke, strong fragrances, dust, and cold air if they trigger coughing. Sit upright when the chest feels tight. If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler, use it exactly as directed; do not borrow someone else’s inhaler or start antibiotics without medical advice. Keep a note of when symptoms occur and whether wheeze, fever, reflux, or an exposure accompanies them.

Call emergency services for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or chest pressure that is heavy, spreading, or associated with sweating or nausea. Arrange prompt medical assessment for new chest tightness, repeated nighttime symptoms, coughing blood, high fever, or symptoms that are not settling. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with heart or lung disease should seek advice sooner.

Ask whether asthma, reflux, allergy, infection, or a medicine could explain the pattern; whether you need breathing tests; which warning signs require emergency care; and how to use any inhaler safely.
