Dry cough, sore throat and hoarse voice

A common cold can inflame the throat and larynx, causing a rough voice and cough. Acid reflux may irritate the vocal cords, particularly after meals or overnight. Chronic cough can keep the tissues irritated. Less common causes include thyroid disease or a growth affecting nearby structures; a hoarse voice is a common presentation of voice-box irritation, not proof of cancer. The duration, smoking history, swallowing symptoms, and neck findings guide evaluation.

Drink water regularly, rest your voice, and avoid shouting, whispering, smoke, vaping, and dusty air. Try not to clear your throat repeatedly; sip water instead. If reflux seems connected, avoid lying down soon after eating and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician. Do not self-treat with antibiotics or steroid medicines. Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow, drooling, coughing blood, or rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling. Arrange a medical review when hoarseness does not settle, keeps returning, or occurs with a neck lump, unexplained weight loss, persistent ear pain, or difficulty swallowing. A clinician may examine the mouth and neck and decide whether the larynx needs specialist assessment.
