Dry cough in pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy can make reflux more noticeable, and reflux may irritate the throat and cause a dry cough. A common cold, acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, or asthma can also present with coughing. Asthma symptoms may change during pregnancy, so wheezing, chest tightness, or breathlessness should not be dismissed as a normal pregnancy symptom. The cough itself does not identify one cause; its timing, triggers, and accompanying symptoms help guide assessment.

Drink fluids regularly, use a warm drink to soothe the throat, and avoid smoke, vaping, dust, and strong fragrances. Saline nasal measures may help if nasal irritation or drainage is contributing. Rest and consider smaller meals or remaining upright after eating if reflux is a trigger. Before taking a cough syrup, lozenge, herbal product, or pain medicine, check with your obstetric clinician or pharmacist; pregnancy stage and other medicines affect what is appropriate. Continue any prescribed asthma treatment unless your clinician tells you otherwise.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, fainting, confusion, chest pain, or coughing blood. Contact your maternity or primary-care team promptly for fever, wheezing, worsening cough, dehydration, or reduced ability to carry out ordinary activities. Mention how long the cough has lasted and any medicines or supplements already taken.
