Dry cough and hard to breathe: what to know

A dry cough produces little or no mucus. Breathlessness can feel like tightness, fast breathing, wheezing, or not being able to take a full breath. Asthma commonly presents with cough, wheeze, chest tightness, or breathlessness, while a common cold or acute bronchitis can irritate the airways. Allergic rhinitis or acid reflux may also trigger coughing. Bronchiectasis and chronic cough need clinical assessment when symptoms persist or recur. In children, bronchiolitis can cause cough and breathing difficulty.

Stop exertion and sit upright. Move away from smoke, strong scents, dust, or other known irritants. Take slow breaths if you can do so comfortably. If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler, use it exactly as directed in your personal plan. Do not borrow someone else’s medicine. Arrange medical assessment promptly if the breathing problem is new, keeps returning, or is limiting normal activity.

Seek emergency help now for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, inability to speak normally, or sudden swelling of the face or throat. Urgent assessment is also needed for chest pain, coughing blood, or breathing difficulty after choking. Contact a clinician soon for fever, wheezing, a cough that persists, or symptoms that disturb sleep.

Ask whether your breathing pattern suggests asthma, infection, reflux, allergy, or another airway condition; whether you need a chest examination or breathing tests; and which symptoms should trigger emergency care.
