Dry cough during the third trimester: what should you know?

The enlarging uterus can make reflux more troublesome, and reflux may irritate the throat without producing phlegm. Allergic rhinitis can cause congestion and drainage, while a common cold or acute bronchitis can leave an irritating cough as the airways recover. Asthma may worsen or become harder to recognise when cough is the main symptom. Bronchiectasis and other lung conditions are less common but need medical assessment when cough is persistent or accompanied by unusual sputum or breathlessness.

Keep hydrated, avoid smoke and fragranced irritants, and try to sleep with the upper body comfortably raised if lying down worsens reflux. Eat smaller portions and avoid lying down soon after meals. Record whether the cough follows food, nasal symptoms, exertion, or nighttime. Before taking a cough, cold, reflux, or allergy product, check its ingredients with a pharmacist or maternity clinician.

Seek emergency help for severe or sudden breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, faintness, coughing blood, or swelling of the throat or face. Contact your maternity team promptly if fever, persistent wheeze, dehydration, or a marked change in usual activity occurs. A cough that continues, worsens, or prevents sleep should be reviewed rather than self-treated repeatedly.
