Dry cough and bloody mucus: what to know

Hard coughing can disturb tiny surface vessels in the nose, throat, or airways. A cold, acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, acid reflux, and chronic cough may present with irritation and coughing. Bronchiectasis may present with recurrent mucus and bleeding. These are possible sources, not conclusions from the symptom alone.

Describe the mucus carefully: clear mucus with a red streak is different from mostly bloody material. Tell a clinician about fever, chest pain, wheezing, shortness of breath, smoking, recent travel, injury, and medicines that increase bleeding tendency.

Drink fluids, rest, and avoid smoke, vaping, dusty air, and repeated throat clearing. Do not use leftover antibiotics or borrow inhalers. Contact a clinician if the blood returns, the cough continues, or you are unsure whether it came from the lungs or upper airway.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or bleeding that is heavy or ongoing. Arrange same-day care for recurrent episodes, fever with deterioration, or unusual weakness.

Ask whether the mucus needs testing, whether your nose, throat, and chest should be examined, and which treatments are safe alongside your current medicines.
