Dry cough with a bleeding throat: what to know

Small streaks of blood after repeated coughing may reflect irritated throat lining, a cracked area in the nose that drains backward, or bleeding gums. A cold, acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, acid reflux, or chronic cough can keep the cough going and make irritation more likely. These conditions can present with cough or throat irritation; the symptom does not identify one cause by itself.

Notice whether the blood is bright red, mixed with mucus, or coming from the mouth without coughing. Also record chest pain, fever, wheezing, breathlessness, hoarseness, smoking or vaping exposure, and medicines that affect clotting.

Rest your voice, sip water, and use humidified air if the room is dry. Avoid smoke, vaping, dust, and forceful throat clearing. Do not start antibiotics or use someone else’s inhaler. Arrange a medical assessment if bleeding recurs, the cough persists, or you cannot identify where the blood came from.

Seek emergency help now for trouble breathing, severe chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or bleeding that is more than a few streaks or does not stop. Prompt same-day care is appropriate for repeated blood, fever with worsening illness, new wheezing, or feeling unusually weak.

Ask whether the blood appears to come from the throat, nose, gums, or lower airways; whether you need an examination or chest imaging; and which cough medicines are suitable with your other conditions and medicines.
