Dry cough and loss of voice: what should you know?

A common cold, acute bronchitis or allergic rhinitis may irritate the upper airway and vocal cords. Acid reflux can trigger cough and voice change when stomach contents reach the throat. Asthma may cause cough without much mucus, while bronchiectasis and other lung conditions need consideration when cough is recurrent, prolonged or associated with breathlessness. In young children, bronchiolitis can affect breathing and deserves prompt attention if breathing effort increases.

Rest the voice, drink enough fluid to keep the throat comfortable and avoid shouting, whispering, smoke and vaping. Reduce exposure to known allergens and keep the air free of dust where possible. Note when the cough happens, whether it follows exertion or meals, and whether wheeze or nasal symptoms occur. A pharmacist or clinician can help select symptom relief that fits your age, pregnancy status and medicines.

Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, blue lips, confusion, chest pain, coughing blood or a child who is struggling to breathe. Arrange medical review if voice loss persists, the cough disrupts sleep, fever continues, symptoms recur or you develop wheeze, weight loss or reduced exercise tolerance. A clinician may examine the throat and chest and decide whether breathing tests or further assessment is useful.
